Programme Notes

With "Fools Rush In" the Players return to comedy after their recent more sober offerings. This gay and witty play opens on a wedding morning with chaos reigning. Mrs. Mandrake, the housekeeper, delightfully played by Jade St. Cyr, trying to bring some order to the house. Her task is in no way helped by the erratic enthusiasms of the bride's mother Angela, a role which brings back a great favourite, Alex Mailer, who scintillates her way through the play. Some of her most amusing scenes are with her daughter, played by Dee Beeching, as a reluctant bride whose startling opinions regarding her impending nuptials spark off the laughter provoking confusion.

Adding further to the complications is a newcomer to Fairlight audiences, Ralph Ward as Angela's fiance, with Bert Gallop adding his usual sure touch, as the long-suffering bridegroom. Marjorie Vandervord as Millicent, an intense, but well-meaning bridesmaid, the cast is completed by David Beeching as an uninvited guest to the wedding, and Patricia Wilkins in a character part of the household daily help.

This is a charming household, delightfully mad, and amusingly gay. With a setting specially painted for the production (by Alfred Beverly), we are sure that everyone can look forward to a most happy and entertaining time.

(Notes copied from the back of the programme)

I confess to feeling just a bit smug here, because the picture at the top was one of the unidentified photos formally in our "mystery box" section. However, I feel confident enough, not only to identify the play, but also to name the cast - from left to right:

Bert Gallop
Ralph Ward
Dee Beeching
Marjorie Vandervord
Jade St. Cyr (seated)
Alex Mailer
David Beeching
Patricia Wilkins
